Course website: <http://www.fleetingimage.com/wij/gd212/>

This course develops the understanding of typographical principles through practical projects that develop skills in the techniques and technologies currently used in publishing. You can read a fuller philosophy behind the structure of the course.

Required readings include materials by Robert Bringhurst, Geoffrey Dowding, Eric Gill, Richard Hendel, Jost Hochuli, Robin Kinross, Jan Tschichold, and Elaine Weinmann.

These charts show the serif fonts and sans serif fonts we will be using for our work, organized by date of development.

Here is some information about font locations in Mac OS X, including how to make fonts available.

Here is some information about how to use Suitcase as a utility for managing your fonts by grouping them into sets you can activate and deactivate.

Here is an important note about word spacing and hyphenation settings in QuarkXPress, and how to improve them.

The instructor for GD 212 is Will Johnston, senior project editor at Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston. My section of this course meets Monday and Wednesday evenings, from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm.
